memorial day weekend part 1

this weekend: parent set 2 of 3 for a visit.

first stop: where else... the garden...

soybeans!

potatoes!

happily, all of that rain made our vegetables very happy.

chives (not thyme) and iris...

next: a stop off at brennan's market for...
no, not marmalade

not raspberries

when in wisconsin, the staples become...

beer

and

cheese

next morning: coffee on the balcony.

to be continued...

school projects and stormy consequences

just like a lawschool course, the summer clinic gives plenty of homework before it even begins. we are allowed to choose how we proceed with one particular project (the others are just reading assignments) and so i decide to sit in the local public library for five+ hours hoping to get people to fill out a survey i have created.

you would help me out right???
no? you would smile and walk right by? or better yet, pretend you didn't notice me? well, i have predicted these responses and planned accordingly...

okay, so the goal was really to entice the kids... which would force the parents to come over. the result: the candy worked. i cannot believe how drawn to this stuff kids are! and how much they will scream and cry for it! it's as though they have a radar which, upon entering a place, alerts them to bright packages filled with chocolate and sugar. and they do not give up until they get some.

most parents then felt obligated to fill out my survey. i know, i know... taking advantage of people's sense of guilt. but... well... it only took about three minutes of their time... and, interestingly, not all parents felt this sense of obligation... or, if they did... did not act on it... of further note, those parents seemed equally interested in the candy. but, to be fair, so did many of the parents who filled out the survey... and many of those without children who filled out the survey.

candy: the unifying force between children and adults... breaking the age barrier... the enticing force drawing both young and old to my table... and my survey.

and i am by no means criticizing this, or writing about it from an outsider's perspective, or attributing sugar cravings to everyone, because i certainly know lots of people who are indifferent to sugar (god help you). not me. sugar is certainly something i cannot do without. i often have sugar withdrawals, which i try to promptly remedy.

i even found a cat who is lured toward the colorful packaging...

well... and strings...

while at the library: a fast-moving but huge spring storm hit...

umbrella-less... although, i doubt an umbrella could have been of much help anyway...

after the storm... the street by our place...

why take the sidewalk when you can ride through the city's biggest puddle...

plastic outdoor furniture... no match for strong winds...

and... it's all just a lot of rain, until the plants get hurt...

radiation... snapped in half...

unhappy redbells...
a sideways storm...

poor little cilantro. you were looking so good too... standing on your own again after days of rain... and now flattened once more...

and oh, the worst part... our little herbs and vegetables... taken outside to get used to the elements... you are swimming...

but alas, i suppose i shouldn't fret too much. flowers, vegetables, rain... they all go together... surely the cilantro will right itself once again and the little tomato plants will grow taller now, the redbells will be happier than before... but the radiation flower... a goner.

greg, upon returning from his frisbee game...

we were out on the field, when all of a sudden the wind changed directions... from north to south, so we all jumped in the car and went straight to the bar. afterwards, when the storm died and the sun came back out we decided to go to a park nearby for layout practice.

(to layout: dive through the air, slide through the grass (or in this case, the mud-soaked field) and catch the disc. disc = frisbee.)

two cats

since i have put up pictures of at least three cats that are not my own (and at least one dog), it is time that i showcase the two little darlings that share the apartment with us. one of my friends remarked, 'regan, you have not put up any pictures of your cats. that is strange. too strange.' am i a bad cat guardian for not showing them off right away? i certainly hope not. fortunately, i don't think they've noticed.

well, without further ado. i begin with... dracula...

what can i say about dracula? she's like a stuffed animal. furry, cuddly, childlike, and silly...

although her name is dracula, she is more like dracula's sidekick renfield in that, this spring, she has eaten at least three flies. but she is also more like lenny from 'of mice and men' because i don't think she intends to kill most of the bugs she kills. she befriends bugs but doesn't know how big she really is compared to them... because look how little she is!

a snuggleball of goodness

she is also like winnie the pooh in that she has a brain full of fluff.

hobbies: afternoon naps, bird-watching, and pruning the flowers on the balcony.
fears: monsters. monsters include the vaccuum cleaner and garbage trucks. however, she is also very brave. once on a trip, she and rabbit were hiding from a pet dog. however, rabbit sent dracula out to investigate. dracula lived up to the challenge, and did so with courage and diplomacy.

next up: a cat i have much respect for: rabbit. do not let this innocent little face deceive you.

these next two photos exemplify much of her personality...
she is at the top of cat tower, and, like the sticker beneath her says, she refuses to surrender her freedom. often, when we pick her up, she will hiss, scratch, and bite at us. she is a cat that knows what she wants and she's not afraid to send dracula in to get it.

when not sleeping 15 hours a day, she is constantly busy...
for example, most cats at the humane society are rather bored or downtrodden in their little cages. rabbit on the other hand did not dwell on her situation. when we first saw her, she was busy hanging curtains and investigating the composition of the crystals in her litter box. she is at once, scientist and entrepreneur. she is the leader and project manager of the work she and dracula undertake on a daily basis.

look at that look...
a no nonsense cat.
hobbies: fact-finding, bossing people around, snuggling, and talking to birds. fears: dogs, motorized toy cars.
oh, she might not want me to say this, but she has a boyfriend named sinatra who lives on the balcony above us.

well, there they are. of course they are much more dynamic than i have made them out to be, but to give you an idea of what they're like i had to emphasize their most stand-out characteristics.

toll roads and martinis (not at the same time!)

if a coaster could talk... what would it say?

saturday: off to illinois. the land of lincoln and unequal tolls (if you don't buy their i-pass, you pay twice the amount at each toll). i think it is their way of punishing wisconsonites because we've got the prettier state. i know this because a) i've lived in both and b) there is always a traffic jam going back into illinois from wisconsin on sunday. you love wisconsin, just admit it... and you are jealous that we get to live there so you try and take our money. (or i am just bitter about the tolls... and the fact that one has no idea how much is being forced from their wallets until they get right up to the booth as all signs have been taken down so as to further discourage those refusing to purchase an i-pass.... so i turn it into a chip on illinois' shoulder.)

anywho, back to saturday, and a place with mini martinis:

when in rome...

a closer view...

some bruschetta...

so, normally i wouldn't take pictures of bathroom doors (though as you can probably tell, what i won't take a picture of is pretty limited), but these were just so darn silly and cute...

onto the next place. we didn't actively seek out this band... by any means... first song we heard: 'turn the beat around'... by gloria estefan.

finally, some photos of those who were there:

stephanie...
... insisted she would only be put on the blog if she were allowed artistic freedom in her photos.

jenny....
...also insisted on artistic license. (don't be mad at me for putting this up here!)

here's jenny without her contact lenses in:
jenny & laura.

julie & steph.

happy laura.

regan & stephanie.

and a little cat to end the post... (emma. also known as erma)
